How child support is calculated in Florida

Florida uses statewide child support guidelines. The court starts with both parents’ net incomes and the number of children, then adjusts for:

  • How many overnights the child spends with each parent
  • Health insurance and uncovered medical costs
  • Child care costs related to work or school
  • Other support the parents already pay

Getting the income numbers right matters. If a parent is self-employed, paid in cash, or has reduced their income on purpose, we work to make sure the court sees an accurate picture.

How long child support lasts

Child support usually continues until the child turns 18. It can continue until 19 if the child is still in high school and expected to graduate before then. Support for a child with a disability may continue longer.

Frequently asked questions

Can we agree on our own child support amount?

Parents can propose an amount, but the court must approve it. If it differs significantly from the guidelines, the judge will need a reason.

What if my ex stops paying?

We can ask the court to enforce the order. Options include income withholding, contempt of court, and other remedies.

Can I stop paying if I lose my job?

No. Keep paying what you can and ask the court to modify the order quickly. Support stays owed until a judge changes it.

Do I need a lawyer if the state is involved?

The Department of Revenue can help collect support, but it does not represent you personally. A lawyer can protect your interests on time-sharing and other issues.
